The artist depicts the situation as peaceful and cheerful for the most part. All the Goblins appear in front of Laura seem to be honorable, harmless, and friendly. It’s like they are ready to have a feast with Laura. However, the artist also delicately addressed the hostility behind the superficial friendliness. As we can see, there are three goblins approaching Laura from behind without her knowing. One smiling deviously and moving toward Laura with his claws reaching the poor girl. Another is patiently hiding under the bush and waiting for his opportunity to jump out. And the last one is already half way on Laura’s dress. On top of these, we see a worrying face on top right spectating the whole event. As if he knew what’s going to happen next and is worried for the girl. All these are Illustrations of when Laura first meets the goblins. (Line 91-114)
Frank Craig made his illustration in a very conservative way. He did not over interpret anything but only took the poem as it is. However, both Laura and Lizzie are suppose to be blonde, but the Laura in this picture happens to a brunette.
